Material/Matter is a performance deriving from the work and research of Sól Ey and Jesus Canuto Iglesias. The makes use of sound sculptures made by Jesus, that are inspired by industrial machinery and its undesired artefacts. The performance explores the sonic and physical relationship of the sculptures and the performer. By playing with light, movements and space the performer is in control of playing the sculptures as instruments, exploring the inherent sound of the industrial and the beauty within the mass of noise.
The piece uses 3 light sensors (photodiods) that each correspond to a sound sculpture. By changing the light over the sensor, the speed of the stepper motors used in the sculptures is changed, resulting in a perceptible change of pitch.
The piece was premiered in Mengi at Raflost festival in 2018.
